National Trails Day 2011

Come join us for our Annual National Trail Day event at the Cannonsburg State Game Area Trail. We'd like to get enough help to do a few (much needed) trail improvements. If you ride this trail a few nights a week, please consider spending a few hours to help give it some TLC!

Here's what we'll be doing:
1. Paint/Stain and resign the Kiosk.
2. Remove the plastic old school mat at the end of Section 4 and replace with permanent natural flagstone armoring. (also elevate the low tread just before that)
3. Make the "Mud Pit" in Section 3 disappear via a cool reroute.

Meet us at 9 am on June 4th at the main parking lot (State Game Area). Bring work gloves, H2O, chair and your bike or hiking shoes for post trail work enjoyment. Tools will be provided along with FREE LUNCH!

This is a Rain or Shine event so come prepared for the conditions.

The Cannonsburg Ski Area is closed until further notice

The Ski Area started logging some trees off the property this morning. About 40 trees have been sold on the east part of the property, right where the bike trails are. :( The trees were sold for cash, not ski runs, so this area should remain great for the bike trails going forward. They think it will take from a week to ten days to remove them so the trails are [b][u]temporarily closed[/u][/b]. We will ask the mountain biking community to lend a hand to return the trails to a good riding condition as fast as possible once they are done. With the Fun Promotions race coming up on June 11th and the State Games race on June 25, we will have our hands full. Hopefully clean up will only require removing small limbs, branches and leaves from the trail surface but I am sure some areas will need some soil repairs.

We all dream of riding new local single track. Well… the dreams becoming a reality as the WMMBA initiates its plan for 50 new mountain bike trail miles in the next 5 years. We need everyone’s help to reach this goal and to kick off the campaign we are having the Trifecta Tour benefit ride. Bring your friends and family, Sund...ay May 22 for a day of riding three of Western Michigan’s best mountain bike trails. Proceeds from the event will benefit the 50 new trail miles in 5 years initiative.

The Trifecta Tour will offer three individual routes to choose from which will challenge riders of all skill levels.
1.) Trifecta = 41 miles approx. ( Ski Hill Area start - State Game trail, Luton trail, Cannonsburg trail )
2.) Double Dirt = 30 Miles approx. ( Ski Hill Area start - State Game trail, Luton trail )
3.) Single Track = 12 Miles approx.( Ski Hill Area start - State Game trail. (A group ride leader will provide a pre ride lesson on trail riding and bike safety )

We will have three local bike shops sponsoring aid station support at each of the three trail heads. They will be providing hydration, fruits and mechanical assistance for riders.

Cannonsburg Ski Area will be open from 11:30 – 3:00 selling post ride food, drinks and adult beverages. Bring your lawn chairs for post ride relaxation, refueling and hanging out with your friends and family.

The event will take place rain or shine. In the case of wet conditions, there will be alternate routes presented to protect our trails.

The meeting on January 3^rd was a huge success. Twenty six people showed up for the meeting and the Biomechanics Clinic put on by Health Motion. Because of the turnout we will try and put on more information chapter meetings like this in the future. For those of you that were not able to attend here is a brief summary of what we talked about at the chapter meeting.

Work on the “Grand Loop”, which is a 40 mile loop in Grand Rapids. This will be the first time anywhere in the US that biking has been formally recognized as part of a city’s formal recreation plan.
Dedication to build 50 miles of new trail in the next 5 years! Lets get to work!
Continue working to get approval to develop Stanaback park in Kentwood. The Kentwood city council decided to table this idea for a while. We’ll continue to fight to get a park down there.

RIDE THE DIVIDE, AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARY FILM, ON MIDWEST MID-WINTER TOUR

Ride The Divide, the award-winning feature-length documentary about the world’s toughest mountain bike race, will continue its Midwest mid-winter tour when it descends on Grand Rapids on Thursday, January 27, at the Wealthy Theatre. The film chronicles the story of several mountain bikers who attempt the 2,711-mile race named the Tour Divide along the Continental Divide in the Rocky Mountains. The movie was named the Best Adventure Film at the 2010 Vail Film Festival.

This film has become an instant cycling classic, and made its television premiere in September on the Documentary Channel. But the Adventure Cycling Association said the film should be seen on the big screen: “The cinematography is stunning!” Added UpaDowna, “Ride The Divide is one of the most inspiring real cycling movies … in a long time.” Epic Riding summed the movie up as follows: “In a word? Fantastic. In more words? Moving, funny, inspiring.”

Ride The Divide embraces the inspiring stories of three of the racers who experience the immense mountain beauty and small-town culture as they attempt to pedal from Banff, Canada, to a small, dusty crossing on the Mexican border. There’s Mike, a 40-year-old family man who uses this challenge to chart a new course in life; Matthew, a leader in extreme endurance racing who’s competing for his fifth time; and Mary, the ﬁrst female rider to race this route. As they set out, they will attempt to accomplish what very few have been able to. Over the course of a few weeks, they’ll attempt to climb over 200,000 vertical feet along the backbone of the Rocky Mountains.

They’ll experience mental breakdowns, treacherous snow, hellacious blisters, and total fatigue. Above all, they’ll race with no support – at times in total isolation. The tests of endurance and the accomplished moments throughout Ride the Divide prompt us to reﬂect on our inner desires to live life to the fullest.

Ride The Divide made its debut at the Vail Film Festival and was named the best adventure film at the event. Outside Magazine proclaimed that “(t)he toughest bike race in the world is not in France,” after reviewing the film.

Ride The Divide will be shown at 7 p.m. at the Wealthy Theatre located at 1130 Wealthy St. SW in Grand Rapids. The event, sponsored by Village Bike Shop of Grand Rapids, is a benefit for the Michigan Mountain Biking Association.
The 10-day, 10-city tour will continue Friday night in Madison, WI.

January Chapter Meeting / Free Cycling Biomechanics Clinic

This special presentation on the biomechanics of cycling will address how the body functions optimally, common cycling injuries and how pain limits a riders endurance, strength and enjoyment when riding.

Our presenter is Tara Jansen, a licensed physical therapist, member of the MMBA and this years 1st place finisher in the Expert Women's Championship Point Series. In addition to covering the biomechanics of cycling, Tara will discuss handling common injuries, tips on avoiding injuries, proper warm up and stretching and answer your questions about any injuries, pain or limitations that are affecting your riding.

This is a unique opportunity to learn about handling injuries and riding pain free. You don't want to miss this Chapter meeting!

Hair of the Dog Ride - Jan 1st, noon @ Founders

What: No drop, everybody sticks together urban singletrack, side road, alley, parking ramp, traffic circle fun ride around Grand Rapids. No rider left behind, traffic rules are in play, helmets, mountain or cross bikes, blinkys, locks, proper dress for the weather & a good attitude are required. We will have a ride leader who needs to remain the ride leader. Anybody that passes the ride leader will be shot………….or, have to drink a shot, we haven’t decided yet. No kiddin, ya pass, ya lose because there are tons of twists and turns that would be hard to figure out.

Where: Founders Parking Lot ~ they’re closed at noon but, everyone knows where they are and they do open at 4pm. Find a place to park and meet at Founders.

When: 01 January 2011 ~ Wheels up at noon please – ride will finish @ The Hop Cat around 2pm or so, depending on weather & what the group wants to do.

Bring: Mountain or Cross bike, lock, cash for the inevitable watering hole stop, on the bike snacks, yourself, your friends and your sense of adventure.

We’ll have a few mobile phones along just in case. First scheduled stop: The Web bar @ 644 Richmond ~ finish at the Hop Cat which opens at: 11:30a.

After that any trail coordinators will give updates on their trails and we'll open up the floor for general ideas / thoughts. Your ideas are volunteerism are what makes West Michigan one of the best mountain bike spots around!

10th Annual Midwest Mountain Bike Summit (Sept 10-12 in Grand Rapids)

The 10th Annual Midwest Mountain Bike Summit returns to Grand Rapids, September 10-12, 2010. Last year, the Summit drew nearly 200 mountain bikers from across the Midwest to Grand Rapids for three days of mountain biking advocacy and festivities, and in the words of Dirt Rag, "Advocacy never tasted so good". With Founders Brewing Company as the title sponsor this year, the 10th Annual Summit will make advocacy taste even better!

So, what is the summit? The Summit was conceived ten years ago by the Earthriders Mountain Bike Club in Kansas City, Missouri as a means to promote singletrack advocacy and awareness. In 2005, the summit began moving east making stops in St. Louis, Missouri (2005-2006) and Peoria, Illinois (2007-2008) before landing in Grand Rapids last year. The summit has grown with each stop, and now it is the regions premier mountain biking advocacy event/festival.

In keeping with tradition, the first day of the summit–Friday, September 10–is dedicated to advocacy. The Clif Bar Advocacy Day includes workshops such as The Ins and Outs of your IMBA Club Insurance Policy, presented by Scott Chapin of RJF Agencies; Developing Urban Trail Systems, presented by Ryan Schutz of IMBA; Tapping Project Resources From a Local University, presented by Professor Carol Griffen of Grand Valley State University; and day one of the two-day IMBA Trail School.

New this year is a Friday night urban ride complete with fireworks in downtown Grand Rapids, and a few optional stops at Founders and other local watering holes for refreshments.

Saturday will have a festival atmosphere with food, a beer garden, and music provided by local bands. The Founders Brewing Company's Festival Day will showcase the Grand Rapids Bike Park, which features a dual lane pump track, a developing skills area, a jump line, and 2.5 miles of singletrack with a jump competition–Pump Track Fury, and a short track competition. Attendees may participate in hands-on demonstrations on topics such as pump track design and the construction of technical trail features, presented by Aaron Rogers of the Copper Harbor Trails Club. If the Bike Park is not your thing, shuttles to other area trails will be provided. On Saturday night, attendees may participate in, or watch, the Cyclocross race under the lights.

The summit concludes Sunday, September 12 with an organized epic ride. The ride covers three different trail systems, almost every kind of surface you can ride a bike on (dirt, roads, and paved trails), and over 40 miles of riding. The epic ride is a great way to experience some of Western Michigan's finest singletrack.

The good news is that the summit is only $20 to attend, $15 if you are an MMBA member, and $5 for children 15 and under (accompanied by an adult). Even better news, if you sign up for the full three days, we'll throw in a reception dinner on Thursday night for free! Can't make it on Friday? A two-day attendance is $10 and includes clinics, classes, and events on Saturday and Sunday.

Mountain Bike Races at inaugural Meijer State Games of Michigan is great success!

Greetings everyone,
On behalf of the Western Chapter of the Michigan Mountain Bike Association, I would like to thank all our friends who came out to race with us at the innaugural Meijer State Games of Michigan mountain bike races.

We were very pleased with the turnout for this first-time event, with over 150 mountain bikers racing in both cross-country and downhill events. The forecast was ominous, but the weather turned out to be perfect for racing: sunny and hot. A new cross-country course set-up starting with a mile-long uphill run to the hole-shot gave the Cannonsburg Ski Area a unique and challenging feel. We began the day with over 30 youths, juniors, and beginners, many of whom were first time cross-country racers. In spite of flat tires and a grueling course, this group had a great time. The sport-class racers came next and they were a big crew with nearly sixty racers including geared bikes, single speeds, and 2 tandems! The course was reset to include portions of the skills course and a table-top feature which was very challenging and the topic of many stories after the race. A large number of sport and beginner racers stuck around to cheer for the more than 30 experts and elites who raced last. What a show they put on, inspired by cheers and cowbells all through the woods and along the course! The day concluded with 15 downhill racers who geared up with body armour and bike with huge suspensions! They put on a great show with tremendous efforts and great results!

A special podium was set up to honor the winning racers. The beginning and sport racers had the honor of receiving their gold, silver, and bronze medals from Olympic silver medalist Pam Kruse. In addition to receiving medals, all 1st, 2nd and 3rd place racers automatically qualify for the 2011 State Games of America taking place in San Diego, California next August 4-7.

Thank you all - racers, parents, family, friends and volunteers - for making this special event a great success - we couldn't have done it without you! We're already planning how to make it even better next year. And since it's never too early to start planning, mark June 24-26, 2011 on your calender - we expect next year's State Games will be even more awesome!

National Trail Day Saturday June 5th

Merrell has partnered with the wMMBA to host a trail work day during National Trails Day Saturday June 5th from 9am-1pm at the Cannonsburg Ski Area and a side trip to CSGA. Merrell will be on hand with a free lunch, free Merrell goodies and a chance to win $100 worth of Merrell products! Last time Merrell partnered with us we had over 45 people attend! We are hoping for a large turnout again as the Cannonsburg Ski Area and Game Area need a major haircut. Come on out and help remove some face slappers. Bring gloves, rakes, loppers, bug spray and water. Event held rain or shine. Canceled if thunderstorms are present.

Misery Loves Company!

The first annual Misery Loves Company membership raising event was held Sunday near Hastings on a HOT day in the sun. Chapter volunteer Martin Hall led a small team to operate a FREE (yes FREE) time trial.

The brutal 14 mile course mapped out by Martin and other members was challenging to the 36 racers that participated. Fourtenn of these racers either renewed their MMBA memberships or signed up as new MMBA members.

A longer course is set for the second in this series of grass-roots events to be held on “Terrific 25” Saturday August 28, 2010 2:00 pm

GR Bike Park Grand Opening

Join the Western Chapter in celebrating the Grand Opening of the Grand Rapids Bike Park, this Saturday, 5/15:

Park Clean-up - Join the Pioneer Construction crew and become a volunteer in this clean-up event, part of the Friends of GR Parks' "I Heart GR Parks" volunteer workday. Many hands make light work and we need your help to continue clean-up efforts at the park.
Bring Gloves and appropriate work clothes. Water and cups will be provided, but to reduce trash, we would appreciate if you bring your own drinking container.
11am - Ribbon Cutting event with Mayor George Heartwell and other local officials.
11:05am - Mayor Heartwell takes the first "official" ride on the pump track.~
11:15am - Join Mayor Heartwell for the Mayor's Bike ride, a family friendly event heading up the Plaster Creek trail.
Or you can try out the pump track or test out the newly minted short singletrack loops. (Or do all three!!) Free cake will be served courtesy of the Rapid Wheelmen Bicycle Club and PedalGR while it lasts.
Come out and show your support for urban mountain bike access in Grand Rapids! The success of this trail and others yet to be developed relies upon the support of our local community.

Spent Day 2 and 3 laying down armoring with Rick and Aaron. Thanks Guys!
Beware of soft sand on the down hill just after the Trail Work Ahead sign in section 3. (as we begin to back fill the old tread) Had a good day armoring with flag and field stone but not quite ready to open for riding. Sand will be going away soon.

Brought in more field stone and created a XLG nick in front of the armored section with the Ditch Witch (I LOVE DITCH WITCHES!) to divert water down the hill vs down and under the armor.

Luton Park Trail Day this Sunday April 25th, 9am

Join us for a trail day at Luton Park this coming Sunday April 25th at 9:00am. Meet at the Kies St parking lot. We will not have the MMBA trailer, so please bring branch trimmers, shovels, rakes, chainsaws, hammers, gloves and boots for working in mud. We plan to install some 18” wide boardwalks to circumvent the mud pits on the Blue Loop thanks to the generous donations of cash and lumber from Mike Napieralski, Dave George, Bob Baker and Matt Gossman! Without their support this project would not have gotten off the ground. Thanks guys! Other projects for the day include some general maintenance and cutting in a few option routes. We could also take advantage of someone with a 4x4 pick-up truck to drive the boardwalks down to the site. Email me if you can bring a truck. Lunch provided.

Misery Loves Company Bike Race

Hey friends, Did that subject line really say free racing? That's right, free and fun are two of my favorite words so I figured I should share them with you. So it's free as long as you are a member of MMBA and if your not a member, become a member and it's free! You can become a member at the race. Fun? Fun because you are on a bike, riding stuff you have never ridden before, competing with your local friends and best of all sharing stories, exaggerations and refreshments with friends after the race on the lawn of the Blarney Stone. Bring your partner, the kids, the neighbors, just don't forget your bike. The more the merrier!
Details? "We don't need no stinking details!' But if you insist the May race will be between 12 and 15 miles the August race will be longer. I'm not telling you the routes! Course is comprised of gravel, sand, dirt roads and hills, did I mention hills! If you like Barry-Roubaix riding then you’ll flip over this as it covers some of the best & worst that Barry County has to offer. Route to be announced the day of the race, don’t worry, you’ll love it!

Bass River Trail Day

Our spring trail day at Bass River is going to be next Saturday, April 17th. Plan on meeting in the parking area at 1:00 pm. I should have the Western Chapter tool trailer, but feel free to bring a favorite wheelbarrow and shovel. Plan is to do general spring cleanup, topcoat the elevated sections, perhaps make a short new elevated section on the north loop, and check the rideovers and perhaps make a new one or two. Once the hard work is done, we’ll scout the area for new trail. The DNRE is quite eager to work with us on addition trail, but we have to make the first step and submit a written proposal.

Please pass this along to anyone you know that enjoys our trail.

Cannonsburg Ski Area opening info

April 16th 2010 is a friday and on that day Cannonsburg will open the hills for everyone... bikers and hikers alike
2010 Rules for the Ski Area
-They can't have any bikers riding towards the triple (west). There are a few old trails going that way, it is not acceptable for anyone to use them. This is very important.
-No one should ever come on to Cannonsburgs' property from Egypt Valley or 5 mile (new trail on 5 mile)... again those trails are closed.
-The only bridge used by bikers and hikers should be the middle bridge.
-They are experiencing the beginning of costly and time consuming erosion on the "double" and the "face" ski hill. No bikers on the ski hills ever... this includes traversing across them. (approved course layouts may be acceptable for events).
-There is a change in the car parking this season. Bikers and hikers are allowed to park anywhere east of the middle bridge on the pavement. There is no need to park off to the side anymore since no bikers or hikers are allowed to cross the maintenance bridge.
-Opening day will always be subject to the weather but closing day will always be the first Sunday in November-(Nov. 7th 2010). This closing day is for all people except for Cannonsburg employees.
-Even though it may sound like they don't want bikers here, that is not the case. They think that it is important to have the community out here enjoying Cannonsburg in the winter and in the summer. It is the success of the western chapter of the MMBA that brings the large number of bikers here. With bigger numbers comes bigger problems... we just have to stay on top of those problems so Cannonsburg can continue to offer top notch biking.

Luton Park Update...Spring 2010

Many of you may not know but a parking lot was created in late December on Keis St. just west of the Luton Barn. The barn has been fenced off and parking for all user groups can take place at this new lot. It is a temporary lot in agreement with the Kent Co Road Commission. A larger and permanent lot will still be built at the Ten Mile entrance when funding becomes available. On some summer evenings the lot may not prove to be large enough for all the cyclists. Please don't park on the shoulder of the roadway, the sheriff can ticket you for this. Simply revert to old habits and park at the D&W Plaza instead.
When the soil conditions dry out a bit more and riding starts taking place out there please ride east from the parking lot toward the barn and join the trail at this point. This will be signed and potentially mowed in and visible soon but I am sure riders will beat the county to the punch on this one. Help "ride in" the connector by using the same path/course each time.
The county is going to add a causeway or raised tread in the two wetland areas of the Blue Loop. They had hoped to complete it this winter if we had little to no snow for a period. That never happened and if they drive back in there now we will really have a mess. They are considering waiting til August so please be patient. We will be involved in top dressing it, shaping and compacting it when the dirt is in place. There is about 500 feet on the east end and 500 feet on the west end that need this work. The wooden board walk ideas have fizzled due to the amount of hiking traffic the Blue Loop gets.
They also were approached by the scouts again. The scouts would like to do some volunteer construction out there and have agreed to place some post markers like the ones used at Siedman and Pickerel. 8x8's with arrows and loop colors on the top of the post. Our plastic arrows on trees would be removed. Not sure when this will take place.Thats it for now. Please resist the temptation to ride for a few more weeks. Go to Yankee or Fort Custer, I hear they are ready to go!

‘Tis the Time of Year to join the Priority Health Cycling Teams at McFaddens at 58 Ionia Ave SW in downtown Grand Rapids to collect some needy items and cash (always needed) for our less fortunate brothers of this community. This annual gathering of the local cycling clan ( including roadies, Mountain bikers and cross racers) allows us all to be thankful for what we have and what we can give to others.
This wonderful gathering started several years ago as a small group of cyclists from a local church and has grown to include the greater community. The Mel Trotter Mission, when asked what they could use for these men responded quickly “ we always need underwear and socks 24/7 all year round”. Thus, the underwear and sock theme. When deciding how much to spend or bring remember how much we all spend on cycling stuff year round. These guys need our help and together we can do a great thing while enjoying each others company with a beer or sandwich or both in hand. Bring your family, friends, teammates, favorite mechanic, personal trainer, etc. the more the merrier!
Join us at McFaddens on Ionia Ave SW on Wednesday December 16th at 7 pm till ???? We will have the upper room completely to ourselves complete with bar, pool tables, big screen TV and loungers. Last year was the best year ever as we raised a few thousand dollars and enough underwear and socks to fill 2 minivans!!!

Luton Park

Mountain bike riding at Luton Park is a pilot program for the wMMBA and Kent County Parks Department. After many years of submitting plans and ideas to Kent Co, the wMMBA was finally given permission to develop trails on the undeveloped land known as Luton Park.

Luton Park had a two-track trail approximately 1.5 miles long (the Blue Loop) and a small parking area near a barn on Kies Ave that was used by local friends, family and neighbors for many years prior to our arrival. One of the stipulations with the Parks Department was that the wMMBA would encourage and recommend to the riders that use the park that they not park at the barn on Kies Ave due to the fact it is too small for the amount of traffic impact we would place there. It would remain a “foot traffic only” parking area. This would also keep peace somewhat with the neighbors that are not pleased with the new activity at Luton Park.

Future plans do call for a parking lot to be built off Ten Mile Road. The current economic situation and major budget cuts have had a serious impact on the county and a parking lot could be years away.

Mountain bikers and cyclist in general have a poor reputation among many people. As with any pilot program, the actions of a few bad seeds can ruin it for all of us. The wMMBA has assured the county that we are a responsible user group and should be given a fair shot.

In the first season and a half of mountain biking at Luton Park it has been observed that many riders have disappointed the wMMBA, the County and the Luton neighbors. Many complaints have been made to the county via telephone, letter, or email including:

· Ignoring posted “No Parking Signs” on 10 Mile Road
· Ignoring requests to not park at the barn
· Ignoring posted “No Night Riding” signs
· Urinating in public
· Drinking alcohol on park property
· Littering energy wrappers and bike water bottles
· Fast riders being rude to hikers or slower bike riders
· Trespassing on park property before dawn or after dusk
· Illegally parking on a county roadway shoulder

Our actions at Luton Park will have a direct affect on the wMMBA’s progress with gaining access to other parkland in West Michigan currently be discussed including the City of Grand Rapids, City of Wyoming, City of Kentwood, Allegan County, Ottawa County and Newaygo County.

The wMMBA and its volunteers have over 1800 hours of labor and thousands of dollars invested in this multi-use trail system. It is currently recommended that riders park at D&W Plaza just 1-mile away and ride the wide road shoulder to and from the trailhead.
I would highly recommend those cyclists and hikers that are pleased that the county has opened this land to us that they write a letter or email thanking them for this great opportunity. KENTWOOD — Stanaback Park’s deep ravines, rough terrain and wooded areas could become home to the city’s first mountain bike trails.

Members of the Michigan Mountain Bike Association recently toured the park, north of 44th Street SE and east of Breton Avenue, and met with parks and recreation officials to discuss trail plans.

Director Charlie Ziesemer said the Parks and Recreation Commission gave its early blessing to the proposal, dependent on final contract agreements and liabilities. Harriet Stanaback, who donated the original 33 acres for the park, also agreed to a first phase of the project.

When Stanaback donated the land in 1998, she stipulated it be kept mostly in its natural state and used for passive recreation.

“I think it’s going to be a very good use for the property,” Ziesemer said of the trails. “They’re (MMBA volunteers) going to come in and do all the work and maintain the trail. It’s really a win-win for the city.”

Details still need to be settled, but MMBA volunteers seem eager to get started yet this year, if possible, Ziesemer said.

The park — the 33 acres donated by Stanaback plus 17 adjacent acres bought by the city this fall with state grants — includes some paved walking trails, a basketball court, restrooms, a picnic shelter and playground.

“It’s a beautiful park, and there are some very interesting natural features there,” said Martin Hall, a member of the Western Chapter of the association. “The ravines are tremendous, and it’s just a beautiful property where people can get close to nature.”

Hall said the park got high ratings from the MMBA because of its natural features, its proximity to other bike trails, and the large number of volunteers in the area to help with construction and maintenance.

If approved by the city, the trails will be built in phases. The first phase could have about four miles of mountain biking trails north of the paved trail, Hall said. If that goes well, a second phase might add another mile or two to the south side.

MMBA is a nonprofit organization with more than 2,500 members in nine chapters. Volunteers design, develop and maintain trails.

Other mountain bike trails in the area are in the Allegan State Game Area, Cannonsburg State Game Area and Cannonsburg ski area, Edward Creek and Greenville Shearer Road in Greenville, Grand River in Jenison, Luton Park Trail in Rockford, Riley Trails in Holland, Robinette’s in Grand Rapids, and Yankees Springs in Middleville.

29 people made the trip down the NCT from Mesick to Freesoil Road(42 miles) or the full on version from Mesick to Baldwin(77 miles). The Pere Marquette Lodge once again served as great hosts for our epic jorney. The weather served up the most diverse conditons only Michigan can produce; from frozen fog to sunny 50's and then some sleet, rain and snow to cap off the ride. The warm lodge, roaring fire, friends, food and Founders beer hit the spot. Check out the trip photos.

7.2 Nomination period will be October 19th - 26th and voting will be via SurveyMonkey from November 1st to the 15th. Winners will be announced at the December 7th meeting.

8.0 Local Government Updates
8.1 Aaron Smith and Nate Phelps will go to the October 6th City Commission meeting for final approval of the bike park. Looks hopeful. If yes, we can schedule the first two weeks in November for Jason Wells to be building trails.
8.2 The Bike Friendly Community (BFC) results are due soon. The Greater Grand Rapids Bicycle Coalition (GGRBC) were hoping for a bronze level for Grand Rapids.
8.3 On a related note to the BFC, Nate Phelps would like Aaron Smith to be the WMMBA Chapter Representative to the GGRBC. Motion made by Martin Hall, Rick Plite seconded. Motion carried.

Join the Western Chapter for a weekend of camping and riding Oct 23rd-25^th and see why Brown County is the best place to ride within a 7 hours drive of GR. While this weekend is a chapter event aimed at getting people together for riding and socializing everyone is on their own for meals and transportation. Carpooling is recommended and if you email us we can try to hook folks up. The chapter has reserved Rally Camp #5 and everyone is welcome to camp on this site (50 max). Cost is approximately $10 per person per night. All other camping accomodations are full already! There may be cabins available for rent as well. Bring the family; there are many non-riding options to choose from including hiking, horseback riding, shopping, wine tasting, swimming and more.

With miles and miles of flowing trail, scenic vistas and amazing terrain Brown County has become a world-class mountain biking destination.

In its March 2009 issue Bike magazine named Brown County State Park one of the best 33 trail systems in North America! It was also named runner-up in the "Best Trail Network" category. The editors said "its...singletrack is among the most varied terrain east of the Mississippi. From berms to steep switchbacks to tight trees to rock gardens, these trails have it all.

Bike magazine also said that Brown County has "flowed-out berms, tight switchbacks and hand-built rock features that will leave you thinking you landed in Tsali [North Carolina] or Canaan [West Virginia]. Ride an out-and-back, and you've got 30-plus miles. Switchbacks? Plenty. Steep climbs? Just like the East Coast. Natural beauty? It's at an all-time high in the fall." Monday, Sept. 14th is the last day to ride at Cannonsburg State Game Area for the year. Come on out and do a lap or several. This "group ride" will have no structure, just individuals or small groups out riding at their own pace. When it gets dark, come on out to the after party which will be just up the road at my house. Weather looks like it will be perfect for a bon fire! Of course there will always be records spinning in the bike barn too. Brats and hot dogs will be provided but there is plenty of room on the grill if you have something specific you want to bring to grill (like a veggie burger for example). BYOB and maybe some chips or something if you feel like it. You can even try your hand at scratching records and wear the gold chain if you want-

Luton Park....Black Loop

The new Black Loop is open for riding at Luton Park. The 2.7 mile trail is similar to the Red Loop. It is all signed and arrowed and you will find the entrance on your right just after the first bridge (if you are starting at the barn). It will wind and loop all over the northeast corner of the property, cross the Blue Trail once and dump you out right near the same bridge. We have one large log pile option to create and quite a few bench cuts to put in but it is all ride able, enjoy! With all the loops complete, the trail system now totals 9.3 miles. The largest mountain bike trail system in Kent County.

Please remember to let the trails at Luton Park dry for at least two days after it rains. Currently (8-29-09) the Blue Loop and portions of the Yellow and Orange have large muddy sections that are growing by the day as people tend to try riding around them. If you encounter mud puddles it is best to ride straight through them so the trail will not get wider.

Meet at the Luton Barn at 6pm tomorrow night (Wednesday 8-26-09) and we will try to get the Black Loop open. I have counted over 130 saplings to dig out of the trail tread and 1.5 miles of the loop still needs to be raked. Need to run a string trimmer in a few areas as well. We have 9 Pulaski's or weed wrenches to dig saplings out, a string trimmer and 7-8 hard rakes available. With a good turnout I bet we could open it for riding. With the game area closure just around the corner and this park remaining open during hunting season it sure would be nice to have this loop rideable. Hate to have it sit all winter. Let me know if you can help so I can get a head count for tools.

This trail day will begin at 10am and last until at least 6. Some of you have worked with us before and so the drill is pretty much the same. Here's what we'll need to do; General trail maintenance and cleanup. The Scouts usually leave quite a mess just because they don't mind climbing over fallen trees. There will be several crews established for different jobs. This will be assigned during the pre-work meeting at the trailhead. New Trail:Some of the bigger jobs may include routing a new trail to replace the part of the Blue that crosses Camp Gerber property. This was in the fine print of the new terms that Matt V had to agree to. We just didn't need to worry about it when the trails were last open prior to Scout Camp.Ranger Al's Special Needs Crew: A very positive benefit for all trail users is keeping Al happy. This crew will be doing this most important job. Usually it's small jobs around camp. New Sign Crew: There will be at least one new sign at the trailhead parking area. Jim Samlow is building it currently and this will need painting for a shiny, new look. This will be the main bulletin board to be used for all trail users. It will be vastly more informative and useful than the old one. It will facilitate the new waiver system that is mandatory. There will also be new signage out on the trail. All these new signs were paid for through a donation by the W.MI Coast Riders Bike Club. Recommended Work Accessories: Bring your bike if you can. Be dressed more for a work day than a riding day. Bring any handy work tools. Small and/or folding saws, gloves, any small container for carrying paint and a small brush please. Trail crews will be asked to remark the blue or red trails as needed. I have the paint. A leaf or garden rake and hand clippers is a good idea, too. Basically, you all know what a clean trail looks like. Just consider this and bring what you've got. Also, please bring your own food and drink. the lunch budget was reallocated into the sign budget!Your Reward: Besides a making a great trail even better, you will be credited with half off the annual $60 pass. DNR working on creating a Rails-to-Trails out there that would allow going around the swampy area (old trash dump and archeological site). Possibly next summer.

A reminder that Trail Coordinators who need to rent additional equipment for spring clearing can request extra funds above their current limit.

Cannonsburg Ski Area requests

I recently met with the Ski Area management they have a requested a few changes in regards to riding on their property. They have asked me to post them up here.
#1 Please enter and exit the Ski Area property via the bridge located near the main lodge. The bridge near the maintenance building is now closed to foot or bike traffic. A couple reasons for this, the machinery in this area is dangerous and they use this bridge for vehicle traffic. They have had a few close calls with riders bombing over the bridge and nearly having head on collisions.
#2 Due to erosion, please don't ride up and down the ski slopes. Stay on designated bike trails only.
#3 Also due to erosion, the red gated entry off Egypt Valley Road is now closed to bike traffic. Please enter the property at the main driveway on Cannonsburg Road.
#4 Do not ride during the evening of Picnic Pops (5pm-11pm) every Thursday and Friday during July
They will be posting signs with all the changes and moving the Trail Head Sign to a more prominent location. I know habits are hard to break but these rules come at the request of the Ski Area and we are their guests. This is private property after all. Please spread the word so we can continue to enjoy the trails!

Cannonsburg Trail Day this Sunday, Aug 2nd

Thanks to everyone that came out today! The 16 volunteers racked up another 60 man hours by cutting another mile or so on the new Black Loop. I would guess we have another mile to go until we reach the end of the loop and then all the bench cutting and fine tuning begins. Building all these trail is tough work and takes time but these trail will be here for years to come and everyone should be proud to be a part of them. A special thank you to Jody's Restaurant for the delicious wraps and to Jody Beard for the chocolate chip cookies! Stop in for lunch or dinner after a ride sometime.

We will hold another trail day on August 8th at 9am, come on out and help us cut open the remaining section!

Midwest MTB Summit Recap

We promote and cover mountain bike advocacy a lot here at Dirt Rag, arguably more than any other magazine. We do it because we believe it is critical for continued access to trails, and to help promote and grow the sport we love. We also do it to give some much-deserved recognition to the good work of all the local clubs and volunteers out there building and maintaining trails for all of us. These local clubs do some amazing work with minimal resources, all in the name of building better trails.

Recently the Dirt Rag World Tour had a chance to get together with several Midwest local trails advocacy groups for the 9th Annual Midwest Mountain Bike Summit in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This was a meeting of people on the front line of trail access, from groups like the Michigan Mountain Bike Association (MMBA), Wisconsin Off Road Bicycle Association (WORBA), Friends of Off-Road Cycling (FORC) Quad Cities, Gateway Off-Road Cyclists (GORC) St. Louis, Chicago Area Mountain Bikers (CAMBr), and Wisconsin Off-Road Bicycling Association (WORBA) to name a few.

These are the kind of people who make it happen in your neck of the woods. They’re out there swinging Pulaskis and McLeods building and maintaining trails. They’re also the ones working with local land managers to gain access to areas so that new trails can be built.

The three day summit/festival was a great way to share information, meet new friends, and learn new trail-building techniques. IMBA was there in force with a 2-day trail school with hands-on technical trail building demonstrations, along with Club-Care and Gateway Trails presentations. Plus there were other workshops and seminars focusing on all aspects of mountain bike advocacy with nationally and regionally known presenters. Stihl and Ditch Witch brought some toys for hands-on trail building at the Cannonsburg Ski Area. There were also races and organized rides from the ski area. Last, but certainly not least, the summit concluded with a 40-mile epic ride. And Founders Brewing provided some much needed refreshments after three days of learning, digging and riding. Advocacy never tasted so good.

A special thanks goes out to Nate Phelps and his crew from the Michigan Mountain Bike Association for hosting this event. Word is, the Midwest Mountain Bike Summit will once again be held in Grand Rapids in 2010. Keep an eye open for details at: www.midwestmtbsummit.com.

National Trail Day- Recap

June 6th was National Trail Day and the Western Chapter along with Merrell celebrated by cutting in 1.25 miles of new trail at Luton Park. A record 43 people attended! Merrell supplied water bottles for particpants and held a raffle for a couple of gift certificates, congrats Jeff Corey and Russ Greenwood! Look for another trail day later this summer so we can finish the loop and open it for riding. Currently it is a dead end so we left it closed for now.

From Bryan: The trails are closed as of sundown tonight for the scout camp.
There has also been illegal trail pirating during the recent closure. This type of defiant behavior will definitely close the door to Owasippe for all! Under the new conditions, we are on a one year probation out there. This is private property. Trail use is a privilege.

After the scout camps are done for the season, there will be a new sign posted at the trail head with a new sign-in procedure so that all riders are accounted for. Please remember that Al and Larry want us out there. They are on our side because bikers are excellent security camera's. Do not confront them in the same manner that someone did whoe drove a large red Dodge truck (license plate "BYU...") in March. The trails will be closed for good and Matt's hard work to re-open will be poisoned forever.

PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO ANYBODY THAT NEEDS TO KNOW! THANK YOU!!!

Epic North Country Trail Ride with wMMBA and PM Lodge

Here are all the details for the 2009 ride:

When: Oct 9th-11th 2009 Where: Marilla Trail Head (Beers Rd) to Baldwin via the NCT (one dirt/paved road bypass near High Bridge approx 8 miles long). Total distance is about 78 miles with a bail out option at the halfway point.

Plan: Meet at the Pere Marquette Lodge in Baldwin on Friday evening. Everyone attends a debreifing meeting Friday at 9pm, PM Lodge
Saturday we rise early for continental breakfast. PM Lodge shuttles us to the Marilla Trail Head and then waits for us at the Freesoil Rd Trailhead (approx half way) with a catered lunch of P&J, snacks, fruit etc. After the trailside lunch the big ride will finish the southern portion of the trip to Bowman Lake Trail Head, then the 8 mile paved road to PM Lodge where a keg of Founders Ale and a gourmet dinner await us. (While this may start as a group ride, riders are encouraged to ride at the pace that they desire and therefore eliminate the sensitivity to large groups of cyclists on the NCT). We will have a sweeper rider to see that everyone gets through the ride. Riders must carry their own tools and water to get them to the 1/2 way point or the full length. The trail is very well marked but maps will be provided. Some of the dirt road sections can become tricky to follow.

Options: Riders may choose to start or finish at Freesoil Rd if desired, eliminating half of the miles. Tip: the section from Beers Road to Freesoil Road is the best section with greater variety of terrain but it is also the hilliest portion. If you prefer flatter terrain and a shorter distance, ride Freesoil South or skip the early shuttle and ride from PM Lodge north to lunch at Freesoil, then return via the shuttle. It would also be possible for someone to go for a hike from the Freesoil Trailhead while others are riding. Perfect for that non-riding spouse.
We have room for 34 people. The room scenarios are all a bit different.

7 double rooms with two double beds in each room equals 28 people. 3 single rooms with one double bed equals 6 people. The Lodge is within walking distance to the Pere Marquette River, and sleeps a maximum of 34 people in 10 rooms. All rooms have air conditioning and whirlpool tubs with a shower. A double room features two double beds and a kitchenette, which feature a small refrigerator, a two-burner stovetop, and sink and dishes. A single room features a double bed with a whirlpool tub next to it. Cable TV and wireless Internet is available in all rooms and in the large central living room area. Room #15 is handicap accessible. The attached dining room is a great place to gather and enjoy the dinner provided. A grill and campfire area is located behind the lodge as well. We will all convene in the main lodge or at a bonfire each night.

Please check this closely. My hopes are that everyone will choose the four to a double room or 2 to a single room so that we can accommodate all 34 of us that wish to go. In other words, if everyone were to book two in a double and one in a single we would only have a group of 17 people. I think we have enough interest to use all 34 spots. We encourage friends to bunk together, 2 couples to share a room. There is a chance a few cabins could open up for us as well, providing additional beds if the interest is there.

Each person gets lodging Fri and Sat night Oct 9th and 10th 2009, continental breakfast, the shuttle, route map, trailside lunch, a very nice dinner (request vegetarian with Frank when making reservations if desired) and Founders beer for the recovery party Saturday night. New this year, we will have a covered truck or trailer to haul the bikes and 2 busses if need be. We will also have a PM Staff member wait with a bus for the absolute last rider at the half way point. These two items are responsible for the slightly higher fee this year.

We cannot split these amenities up. It is all or nothing. No camping option, no shuttle elimination etc.

Cost is $145 per person for the weekend

Excluding 6% sales tax.
Pere Marquette Lodge supports the MMBA and therefore has already discounted these rates by 15% for MMBA members. Please sign up for a MMBA membership if you are not a member. A MMBA membership is tax deductible.

Today a team of Volunteers embarked on the first Organized Trail Day of 2009 at the Game Area. The focus today was reclaiming the overgrown main trail head parking lot on 4 mile road. Trimming, Tilling and Tamping reclaimed approximately 30 feet of width to the back half of the parking area. The idea is to promote parking in three rows vs two in order to allow more vehicle parking in the parking lot relieving the parking out on 4 Mile Road a long time complaint of the local residence. So try parking as far to the left and right as possible and in the center next time your out for a ride. A special Thanks goes out to Johnny Carinos Italian Restaurant at Knapps Corner for donating a great lunch. Thanks Mike!

Cannonsburg State Game Area

Today a team of 13 eager Trail Crew Volunteers completed the second planned Trail Day of the season at the Game Area. I must say we knocked one out of the park at the game area today! The Crew completed the long awaited trail reroutes flagged and approve last year. These sections are in the 3rd section of trail before the parking lot at 3 mile road. Work included reroutes around two severely eroded fall line trail and sand pits. Reclaiming of the old ruts and trail was also completed making the old trail almost disappear. Great work team, awesome job! Thanks you.

If so, how can citizens, government and business take action to make these visions a reality? Who are the champions who will move pieces of the green agenda forward in Grand Rapids?
At Green Gathering: Actions on Wednesday, May 13, 6:30-8:30 p.m., the public is invited to review three park special studies – Joe Taylor, Ball-Perkins and Butterworth Landfill – and three Grand River special studies – 201 Market Street, eastside riverwalk extension from the Blue Bridge to Wealthy St. and a “rapids” run on the Grand River. Future action then will be prioritized based on recommended strategies for Natural Systems, Greening, Parks and Recreation, Connections, the Grand River and Local Food.
The forum takes place at Harrison Park Elementary, 1440 Davis Ave. NW in Grand Rapids. It is the third of three community forums hosted by Green Grand Rapids, an 18-month project launched by the City to update the 2002 city-wide Master Plan and the Parks and Recreation Master Plan with an emphasis on green initiatives. Luton Park Update

May 9th will be our next trail day at Luton Park, we plan to remove all of the items in the dump pile on the yellow loop. Padnos has already agreed to provide a dumpster for scrap metal and we plan to have a dumpster for trash as well. The problem will be that we need plenty of "runners" to go back and forth the 1/2 mile from dump to barn. If you have a pick up truck, quad, skid loader, trailer, etc. let me know so we can coordinate the haulers for the day. Then we need plenty of people to pick up the scrap and trash. Most of these items are tires and 5 gallon metal buckets. Please bring leather gloves and heavy work boots for protection! Do you have little ones that would like to help? This is the perfect chance, tons of tin cans and unbroken glass bottles to pick up too. Again bring gloves. We could also use flat blade shovels, leaf blowers, rakes, plastic trash cans. Spread the word on this one, lets make Luton Park a better place for all to see.

Update: Forest Hills Foods deli department has donated box lunches for the event, thanks Jeff!
Padnos Iron and Metal has so graciously donated a scrap metal dumpster and Allied Waste will provide the trash dumpster, thank you Doug, Lee and Jan!

We had a total of 20 people on April 26th and the rain held off until we got the Yellow Loop completely fine tuned. Due to the heavy rain last night, the very first section has a 20 foot area underwater, this is easy to avoid by simply riding the old original hiking trail near by. A total of 80 man hours were put into the trail work today! The new bench cuts will not only improve the flow of the ride but also lessen the erosion that storm water causes by running down the trail. Good work everyone! A special thank you to the Bissell cycling team for providing the lunch today.

Thanks to all volunteers for the hardwork, some starting last Oct 2008, to make the 20th Anniversary of the Time Trial a huge success. Feedback from racers online and via emails are overwhelmingly positive!

Results show 550 registered racers. What's even MORE significant- only 126 of these were day-of registrations, which means we had a 77% pre-registration rate via BikeReg.com. We cannot understate how important pre-registration is to helping the check-in process for the volunteers on race day! This percentage is unprecedented for most mountain bike races.

Niel Scharphorn, sporting BikeTag #1 for the second year, took first place in the elite category for the second year in a row with a TWO-lap time of 1:29:22 He did his FIRST lap nearly as fast as previous years! Lap #1 = 43:57, Lap #2 = 45:25 (2008 his one lap time was 43.32)-- Congratulations Niel!

The Anniversary Pint Glasses were a great success- and we sold 63 online at $5.00 each in addition to the glasses we gave to the 425 pre-registered riders. We sold 61 Time Trail T-shirts online via BikeReg and a significant number of shirts were sold on site as well by Jason Bechtel, who admirably manned the Shirts and Pintglass table.

Also, the timing company's online results search was highly applauded

GRAND RAPIDS -- Mountain bikers will have a new place to ride within the Grand Rapids city limits this summer.

A mountain bike trail and skills area are slated to be built in May at the former southwest Little League site at 580 Kirtland, now the home of a BMX bike track operated by Helmet-On.

The project comes after three years of discussions between area mountain bikers and the Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation department. Cyclists have been asking where a city park trail might be built. Dr. Carroll Griffin presents survey of NCT usage. Did Trail head user survey. Survey done on one section of Huron Manistee National Forest. Morilla to Timber Creek Research goals were to identify user perceptions of the trail, compare 1997 to 2004 surveys. Found in 2004 about equal use between Hikers and Mountain Bikers. Of any user group asked, 80% were satisfied with their experience. Negative experiences mostly derived from run ins with very large groups. 80% of bikers know who has right of way compared to 60% of hikers.

Jason Jones is now Director of Advocacy. Jason is putting together advocacy committee, to bring together issues and good practices from all trail coordinators in state. Two new directors and State President meeting with DNR on friday. Asking for top ten list to present to state level to be addressed. Coordinators, please contact Nate with your ideas and lists via e-mail.
Membership: 1122 Volunteer Hours to date. 340 Volunteer Hours at CSGA, 32-35 folks at Game Area. 192 Active Members. 58 are new members. Good turn out at trail days. Looking to do bi-monthly calender/re-newal.
Treasurer’s Report: Sue Swiger; sitting on $9000 for chapter. Sue motions to set aside $5000 for next year’s YSTT. Passed. $4000 remains for chapter budget. Yard Boss and Chainsaw were most recent purchases.

Bass River: Tom: Trail day on mud pit. you can ride back section without getting dirty now. fall trail day. just maintain trail path. talk of skinny through mud. DNR Master Plan coming soonSki Area: Rick: 1/2 mile added last week. follows creek, still difficult like the ski area. trail beds shaping up nicely. some soggy areas that may need armor. always more to do. 6 miles total. potential of 8 miles. Rick having no problem getting free food.
Yankee Springs: Martin Hall: Trail Update: prescribed burn 1/3 of trail was burned. Tim + Martin have good relationship with DNR. 3 plans: first, renumber trail with miles, stop points, and emergency exits. second, new rest room at trail head; DNR to provide blue prints for new outhouse, looking to use money/volunteers to do outhouse with donated help/material. third, Review of master plan for State Recreation Area. Martin and Tim proposing new trails with cooperation of land managers.
Yankee Time Trial: Good turnout, good weather, count: 509 racers, tentatively. good results for chapter. no timing disputes. good feedback. great fund raiser for chapter. Great work by volunteers, there was no want for volunteers this year.

I started riding bikes again in 1998 after a 25 or so year hiatus. It was one of the best things I ever did for myself. I am now turning 50 and am fit, healthy and not on the fast track to a heart attack! Since my return to bikes I have participated in the CPS, Fun Promotions, Tailwind and Kiss Cross racing series. I have volunteered as co-trail coordinator at Yankee Springs (Deep Lake) for a few years, served on the Yankee Springs Time Trial Race committee and for the last year have served as the chapter treasurer.My professional life is in business, I currently am a Business Development Manager for Land O’ Lakes, working with the executive management teams and boards of directors of cooperative members through out Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. I hold an A.S. and B.S. degree in Economics from “The Ohio State University”
I’d like to serve another term as Chapter Treasurer to continue working on and accomplishing some of the fiscal and structural initiatives we have begun this past year. My initiatives for this position in the coming year are:1. Implement a financial accounting/reporting system which can be handed off to the next chapter Treasurer while maintaining consistency, accuracy and understanding without that treasurer being an accountant.2. About Jennifer Bechtel:My husband and I moved to Grand Rapids, MI two years ago this month from the Dallas, TX area. We were very active in the mountain biking association there, including helping with trail work and racing events and riding in some regular and 12-hr race events ourselves. Since moving to Grand Rapids, we have gotten to know the local trails and been active in the Western MMBA, including being part of the last two years of Yankee Springs Time Trial Committees. I plan on being at the Western MMBA meetings anyway and I am usually taking notes anyway so I accept the nomination of Secretary. I also have experience being the Secretary of other groups, such as my past Denton chapter of the Texas Water Utilities Association.

A Recap of the 2008 Western MMBA Epic North Country Trail RideMonday, October 27th, 2008
Over the weekend of October 10th - 12th, the Western MMBA held its Epic North Country Trail Ride. It all started on a beautiful Fall Friday afternoon as everyone met up at the Pere Marquette River Lodge, which sits along M-37 in Baldwin, MI. One of the great features of the lodge was the main room, where folks relaxed and mused over the ride information until it was time to head out to dinner. Dinner choices were narrowed down to Smokeys (for ribs, etc.) or Woodys (for pizza, etc.). Having eaten at Woody’s, I can say it would only be fair to place as much emphasis on the “etc.” as the excellent pizza.

After a leisurely dinner, all riders met back at the lodge for the informational meeting in the dining room. Frank, owner and operator of the Pere Marquette, and Rick (organizer of this excursion) covered the details of the trail and transportation options. Trail etiquette and time frames were covered. With an early morning planned, all were glad to hit the hay soon after the meeting.

The carb-load breakfast, courtesy of the lodge (thank you again Frank!), was at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Plenty early so people had time to eat and get their bicycles loaded up. It was dark and chilly outside but everyone was extremely patient with the bicycle-loading process. Once all was ready, it took approximately one hour to motor up to the Marilla Trailhead. Unloading went quickly and the first groups started out at about 9:20 a.m. The beginning was fairly hilly so it didn’t take too long to get warmed up and start shedding layers. The clear trail, lack of sand, and the sight of brightly colored leaves falling in the sunshine really made the day. There were a few mishaps during the ride: a loose seat post, a few people getting lost, the 4 mile miscalculation between the UDell and Freesoil Trailheads…but really not too bad. At Freesoil, a waiting lunch bus provided peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, snacks, and drinks to re-stoke the riders that chose to ride the full 73+ mile option. Those who were happy with their 38-but-actually-42 miles ate and then boarded the bus to be taken back to the Lodge. We later hear from many others in the group that the stretch before Freesoil did seem to go on strangely long. Those warm peanut butter and jelly sandwiches some may have scoffed initially became the best d#*n PB&J they had ever had.

It took the remainder of the day for all the riders to trickle back in at the lodge, where they could clean-up, sit in a chair on the back porch, and enjoy complimentary Founders IPA before dinner (one of the many bennies of being part of the Western MMBA). Those who opted for the full 73+ mile experience were gleefully achy. There are many who thought they would do the full ride but now show no shame that they chose to take the lunch bus back to the Lodge. Dinner was served at 7:00 p.m. I didn’t get pictures of the dinner until they served the pie and ice cream, but I recall pork, mashed potatoes, vegetables, and bread that were really delicious. During dinner we also heard about the large number of fish caught by one of a rider’s son, who opted to spend the day doing what the Pere Marquette is well-known for, guided fly-fishing. For the rest of the evening, some turned in early while others relaxed by the fire pit out back of the lodge. Not a bad ending to an exhilerating day!
Plans are made to make this a yearly event. Just need to get a guarantee on the same excellent weather…

Introduction to Luton Park-Group RideThursday, July 17th, 2008

Join us Wednesday Evening, July 30th, 2008 for a “Introduction to Luton Park Group Ride”
Park and meet at the D&W Plaza on the corner of Northland Drive (Wolverine) and 10 mile Road. Look for the wMMBA Banner. Clip in/roll out time is 6:45 PM, so arrive by 6:30 PM. We will roll out as a group and ride to the trail head from here. About 1.25 miles of paved and paved shoulder road. Once at the park we will ride as a group for one lap of the green, blue and orange loops (3.5 miles total single track) stopping for explanations of the work involved to date and future planning plus a bit of history. After completing one lap we will break off into smaller groups and continue to ride some more if interested. Also, the Ski Area is 5 miles away via Meyers Lake Road for the adventuresome. Requirements: bring a mountain bike in good working order, a helmet, water and a snack if needed. Ride canceled if raining. Watch this site and forum for up to the minute updates re: weather. Saturday July 19th. 2nd annual westernMMBA ale and trail potluck extravaganza. We supply the grills and chapter member Cramer is graciously supplying his backyard for an afternoon of riding, grilling, and general tomfoolery. Bring something to grill for yourself and something to pass- homebrewers this your chance to dazzle us with your best. Meet up at the Cannonsburg Ski Area by the westernMMBA tool trailer.
The group rides start at 2pm. 2 options will be offered.
A - combination of the ski area, the game area, and some hilly roads.
B - same as above at a much more relaxed pace.
After the rides we move over to Cramer’s for the rest of the day. You can either ride or drive to Cramer’s from the ski area parking lot. It isn’t far. Route maps and a map to the Cramer Casita will be handed out in the parking lot.

Cannonsburg Ski Area Skills Park Grand OpeningSunday, July 22nd, 2007

The Western Chapter of the MMBA will be having a grand opening of the Cannonsburg Ski Area Skills Park Saturday, August 18 from 10 am until everyone gets tired.
If you’ve been meaning to ride skills area but haven’t yet, this is a great opportunity. If you just want to see what all the chatter is about and see someone ride “that stuff” come on out. Come show your skill or pick up tips from other riders.
The chapter will provide BBQ for lunch.
The skills area is located between the two track at the end of the XC trail and the ski hills. It can be accessed by riding the XC loop or by walking from the base of the hill up the two track a few hundred feet.
Like the XC loop, the skills area is free to ride. Just bring your bike, helmet, and sense of adventure.

IMBA in GR and MMBA Expo post thoughtsFriday, February 16th, 2007
I’m pleasantly surprised how well our conference went. When Rick and I started sending out invitations, I wondered if anyone would come. In the end 30 people attended. We started at 11am and were supposed to finish around 1. At 2, a few people were still talking with each other. Score one for the Western Chapter and a big thanks to Todd Scott and Scott Linnenburger from IMBA. The topic of discussion at the conference was ‘Quality of Life’- emphasizing natural surface trails and how trails can benefit health and recreation for West Michigan resident’s lives. The attendee list included a variety of park and rec directors, business owners, and cycling coalitions.
Afterwards we took Scott down to Founders. The opportunity was open to all MMBA members and not that many showed up. Which was kind of disappointing. On a positive note, several Western Chapter trails coordinators and all of the board members were able to spend time speaking with Scott one on one. It’s this type of casual conversation that sparks the imagination. We talked trail design, trail advocacy, a bit about biking.
Sunday, Rick and I traveled down to the MMBA Expo to represent. We had a small booth and quite a few people came by to check out our display. Rick put together a couple of books with trail maps and pictures from the past year at various events. It was simple, but it worked well. Being next to the Quiring Cycles booth probably didn’t hurt us either. Anyhow- we hung to around 2pm and decided it was getting to be a long day. I guess we should have stuck around as I heard second hand that the Western Chapter was given a fair amount of accolades for some many people having FAFL awards. Kind of cool, didn’t really understand how it all worked, and sorry to have missed it.

Volunteer hours are at 975 hours. Broken down, 135 hours represent administration- website, newsletter, treasury, etc and the balance is in trail planning and trail maintenance. Hours will continue to trickle in until the end of the year and it seems likely we will be right around 1000 volunteer hours for the year. There are 20 members with over 10 hours spent in trail maintenance. Thanks one and all.
A majority of trailwork was performed at the Cannonsburg Ski Area. The old mtb race course has been rehabbed into almost 5 miles of singletrack. Additional singletrack is being planned now for next year. Current guesstimate is 2-3 miles; bringing the total trail length close to 8 miles.
The Hungerford Lake Trail has been much maligned over the years. The biggest reason cited is horse traffic on the mtb trail. Work has started in resigning the trail. Riding clockwise from the trailhead is the best marked for now. New reroutes of shared trail sections will be completed in the Spring of 2007. Two new committees were created this year. A race committee was formed to handle the added complexity of the chapter promoting the Yankee Time Trial. The committee is headed up by Yankee co-trail coordinator Martin Hall. Before any naysayer speak, let me say that with the proposed trail projects in 2007 the chapter will rely on the added income. The second committee formed was proposed at the October chapter meeting. The WMMBA now has a Freeride Committee and it is headed up by chapter member Jason Dew. Some of Jason’s trailwork is currently being ridden at Edwards Creek in Greenville.
Strategic planning for the future of the chapter will start in November. We are looking to set goals to ensure continuity in our advocacy efforts. Local land managers need to be able to depend on the WMMBA’s presence. We need to break the start/stop patterns that ensure the halt of forward progress. I hope to adopt a plan for the next few years by February.

Trail Coordinator ChangesMonday, July 24th, 2006
A couple of recent meetings led to some changes for the Western Chapter. Ionia is back in the Chapter, under the care of Dennis Murphy. Big M is now under the wing of the Western Chapter, Ken Blakey-Shell, is the trail coordinator up there. Finally, Hungerford will be led by Aaron Smith and Nate Phelps.

Recently Dennis Murphy stepped down as Chapter President due to too many obligations and a great need to just get out and ride. He will remain on board to represent the chapter at the State level. When you see him thank him for many years of carrying the MMBA torch on the west coast.
Stepping into the President’s seat will be Nate Phelps, coming up from the V.P. position. He’s already got the ball rolling on quite a few projects, and has been busy rallying the troops and talking advocacy with our local city and county representatives. You’ll be seeing plenty of him at chapter events and out on the trail.
There have also been a few more Trail coordinator changes in the past month. John Haffenden will be letting go of Yankee Springs after many years of overseeing the trail there. He’s going to take over at CGSA because its much closer to his house. It’ll be in good hands. Taking over at Yankee will be Martin Hall and Tim Curtis. After seeing the work they did at the last trail day, I think Yankee is also in good hands. Finally, Jason Mead is taking over at the ski area. He’s already been out there marking trail. We can expect good things.
Trail School June 10 + 11 is the 1st trail school for the Western chapter. For those of you attending, it starts at 9AM and ends at 4PM both days. Lunch provided by the chapter. there are still a few spots open: details.
The trail school will open up season of renovations at the ski area. Permission has been secured for the MMBA to reroute and add trail at will. Jason Mead will be heading up the changes. He was just out there marking new trail with Rick Plite and John Haffenden and it sounds like the groundwork is being laid to make the trail more fun for everyone. We hope to turn the ski area into a sustainable trail with about the same length as the game area. Stay tuned for opportunities to help out.

Some changes in trail leadership going on. Tom Landry is joining Jeff Foos out at Bass River. 1st goals are getting the DNR an official map and then some signs, then some strategerizing about what to do about that mud pit in the back section. Up at Edward’s Creek, Troy Gough is taking over. If you haven’t been up there to check out what they’ve done, you’re missing out.

That is what Grand Rapids cyclist Jeff Festian said about the come-as-you-are crowd expected at the second annual Grand Rapids Bicycle Film Festival at Wealthy Theater on Feb. 7.
No helmets. No spandex. No clip-in shoes. No pumps. Anyone interested in cycling and films is welcome,” said Festian, the former president of Rapid Wheelmen, a 500-member road cycling club in Grand Rapids. “We are looking to create a cultural event that draws more than cyclists.”

The festival, he said, is a midwinter celebration of cycling. Funds raised from the event will go toward the Midwest Mountain Biking Summit in Grand Rapids. Organizers from the West Michigan chapter of the Michigan Mountain Biking Association say they want to tap into the city’s growing “green initiative.” That means people who ride to work and those who ride casually. “We think it’s a good event for Grand Rapids,” said Nate Phelps, co-organizer and board member for the association. “We want people outside of our respective cycling communities to come down and see what the culture is about. We are showing a little wider variety of films this year. They should appeal to the casual rider as well as the full-on racer.”
Festian and Phelps are expecting a large turnout for the nearly three hours of films. Last year’s event got little fanfare. It was held in the small auditorium at Wealthy Theater, which was filled to capacity. This year, it will take place in the large auditorium.

The films cover a mixture of themes: Human interest, political and action.
“We Just Work Here” is a documentary by Brian Vernor, a California-based photographer and filmmaker. He turns his lens on coworkers at a Santa Cruz, Calif., bicycle company and captures the human dimension of those who live to cycle.

“I saw these people all around me, living and working in an area that they had a passion for,” Vernor, 33, said in a telephone interview from Toronto, where he was working on another film. “Cycling is often portrayed as an individual pursuit, but most people who cycle are drawn to the community. I found this particular bike community in Santa Cruz especially unique.”
Phelps called the film a “great movie, a lighthearted documentary.”“ZERO traction” is a look at hard-core cyclocross racing in extreme weather conditions.

The more gritty film is “ZERO traction” by Keith Walberg, a cyclocross racer and filmmaker who captured the adrenaline rush of a cyclocross event held in extreme conditions. The film was shot over four days in December, during the 2007 Cyclocross National Championships in Kansas City. It is a high-intensity look at 30 races — all set to music.

Walberg, who created “Roll Your Own Films” in 2008, said he was inspired to make the film after attending the 2000 championship in Kansas City.

“It was brutally cold, and seeing 12-year-olds and 65-year-olds giving it their all was pretty inspiring — and pretty cool,” Walberg said.

“I work in video production doing television commercials and training films. This is my first film of any length. So far, the response has been pretty good.” Area filmmaker Tom Scheidel, of Rockford, will show a brief trailer for a film currently in production. “More Than 100 Miles: Riding to Cure Diabetes” looks at the lives of area riders who have committed to a 100-mile ride through Death Valley to help raise funds for diabetes. Scheidel began fundraising for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation about 11 years ago after his son, Jake, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. The foundation holds fundraising rides around the country. “Last year, our West Michigan team raised over $260,000,” Scheidel said. “Nationally, JDRF raised $4.2 million. The film looks predominately at local riders. They are riding 105 miles in 100 degree heat and 20 to 30 miles per hour headwinds. I document their thought processes and talk to them during their training, during the ride and after the ride.”

Lastly, there will be an hour of mixed short film subjects from “Filmed By Bike,” a film festival based in Portland, Ore., that screens short films made by independent filmmakers. Each film is limited to eight minutes. “I liked them all,” Phelps said. “Some are pretty amateur, YouTube kind of stuff, but others are very professional. That’s the neat thing about it. It’s all bike-themed short movies. Some are social commentary and some are comedy.” Said Festian: “The main thing is, we are trying to put on a fun event.” And remember, leave the helmet at home.

The film features racing action shot in slow motion. It includes interviews from Steve Tilford, Ned Overend and elite champion Tim Johnson. (Time: 67 minutes) “Filmed by Bike Festival”The film festival, based in Portland, Ore., showcases bike-themed independent short movies from around the world. Submissions are limited to eight minutes. A portion of the festival entries are being shown. Introduction to Luton Park-Group Ride

Join us Wednesday Evening, July 30th, 2008 for a “Introduction to Luton Park Group Ride”
Park and meet at the D&W Plaza on the corner of Northland Drive (Wolverine) and 10 mile Road. Look for the wMMBA Banner. Clip in/roll out time is 6:45 PM, so arrive by 6:30 PM. We will roll out as a group and ride to the trail head from here. About 1.25 miles of paved and paved shoulder road. Once at the park we will ride as a group for one lap of the green, blue and orange loops (3.5 miles total single track) stopping for explanations of the work involved to date and future planning plus a bit of history. After completing one lap we will break off into smaller groups and continue to ride some more if interested. Also, the Ski Area is 5 miles away via Meyers Lake Road for the adventuresome. Requirements: bring a mountain bike in good working order, a helmet, water and a snack if needed. Ride canceled if raining. Watch this site and forum for up to the minute updates re: weather. 2nd annual westernMMBA ale and trail

Saturday July 19th. 2nd annual westernMMBA ale and trail potluck extravaganza. We supply the grills and chapter member Cramer is graciously supplying his backyard for an afternoon of riding, grilling, and general tomfoolery. Bring something to grill for yourself and something to pass- homebrewers this your chance to dazzle us with your best. Meet up at the Cannonsburg Ski Area by the westernMMBA tool trailer.
The group rides start at 2pm. 2 options will be offered.
A - combination of the ski area, the game area, and some hilly roads.
B - same as above at a much more relaxed pace.
After the rides we move over to Cramer’s for the rest of the day. You can either ride or drive to Cramer’s from the ski area parking lot. It isn’t far. Route maps and a map to the Cramer Casita will be handed out in the parking lot.
